A fantastic
piece of engineering work, Itaipu is a gigantic hydroelectric power
plant capable of producing 12.6 thousand megawatts.
One of the
Seven Wonders of the Modern World, chosen by the American Society of
Civil Engineering (ASCE), Itaipu inpresses by its sheer numbers: the dam
extends nearly 8 thousand meters, stands 196-meters tall, and its
spillway handles 62,200 m3/sec. and 18 turbines. Until 2004
another two turbines will be at work, increasing the production capacity
to 14 thousand megawatts.
Visitors who
see the Itaipu plant lose all notion of scale due to its magnitude.
